Three Months of the New Process: What Changed for a One-Engineer Firm
This is the second monthly update to our thirty-month case study of a one-engineer structural engineering firm with two offices in Wisconsin. The first update is here. We re-pulled the same numbers from the same sources on November 5, 2026, day 91 of the stricter weekly process the account moved to on August 6. Google’s search data was complete through November 1, so the “latest 28 days” below means October 5 to November 1, and the 28 before means September 7 to October 4.
This is a visibility update, not a results post. It shows what Google displays, not what the firm’s phone did. The year-over-year growth below is a result of two and a half years of work. The last three months did not produce it on their own.
The Numbers, Then and Now
Search appearances, same three months a year apart. Moved forward another month, August 1 to October 31: 5,432 appearances and 41 clicks in 2025, 20,260 appearances and 114 clicks in 2026. Nearly four times the appearances. Last month’s comparison read about three times.
Latest 28 days against the 28 before. September 7 to October 4 re-pulls exactly as we printed it: 39 clicks on 6,442 appearances. The latest 28 days: 47 clicks on 7,587 appearances.
The map. A new snapshot on November 1 shows the firm as the top map result for “structural engineer” at all 39 points around each office. Sixth snapshot since June 23 with the same reading. A standing, not a gain, and we have no 2024 “before” for the map.
The rank tracker (20 searches, one fixed check, newest reading October 30). Last month: four at number one, eleven in the top ten, nine not ranking. Now: four at number one, fourteen in the top ten, three not ranking.
Service searches on page one. Last month’s latest window had 131 page-one searches, 19 of them for services the firm sells. The latest 28 days: 147 and 29, counted on the same written rule. Most page-one searches are still from two explainer articles.
The city pages. All ten city pages now show in Google’s data, against seven last month. Together they went from 67 appearances to 99. One page is now the page Google shows for its own town. For one wording of that town’s search it averages position 9 on 4 appearances; for the more common wording, position 11 on 9.
The Google listings, October against September (from a synced copy of the listing data, not Google’s own dashboard):
- Main office: views 344 → 206, search appearances 269 → 168, website clicks 22 → 16, calls 9 → 7, direction requests 61 → 52, total interactions 92 → 75.
- Second office: views 191 → 192, search appearances 146 → 148, website clicks 10 → 9, calls 4 → 5, direction requests 45 → 55, total interactions 59 → 69.
Reviews. One at each office, both answered. No change.
What Went Up
The main city search, in Google’s own data. Last month this was the headline slip. In September’s window it averaged position 9 on 23 appearances. In the latest 28 days, position 4 on 27 appearances. The fixed tracker check holds it at #5.
Service searches on page one went from 19 to 29. These are searches for things the firm sells, such as structural inspections, residential and commercial structural engineering, and insurance-claim work. Most of the new ones were seen once or twice in the month, so we read this as a wider spread, not a jump in demand.
The tracker filled in. Six searches that did not rank last month now do. The insurance-claim search moved from #9 to #3, and residential engineering in their city from #5 to #3.
The second office’s listing kept climbing. Interactions went from 59 to 69, direction requests from 45 to 55, calls from 4 to 5. It is now back level with July, before August’s drop.
City page appearances rose by about half, and every one of the ten pages is now being shown somewhere.
What Went Down
The main office’s listing fell on every line. Views dropped from 344 to 206 and interactions from 92 to 75. Across both offices, calls went from 13 to 12 and website clicks from 32 to 25. The likely read, not a finding: September was a spike and October settled back. Most of the drop is desktop views. Main office interactions are still above July’s 69. We do not know what any of these calls became.
Three tracker slips. The firm-name-plus-city search went from #1 to #6. The commercial search for their city went from #2 to #9. Structural drawings went from #10 to #13. The likely read, not a finding: Google still rotates which page of the site it shows for city searches. Through October it showed at least six different pages for the main city search, and none of them was a city page.
Two pages got more appearances, lower on the page. The second-office city page went from position 9 on 10 appearances to position 16 on 21. The investigations page went from position 18 on 27 to position 24 on 46. The likely read, not a finding: Google is testing them on more searches before it settles.
The main city search, over three months. August to October averaged position 4 this year against position 3 a year earlier. Closer than last month’s comparison, still behind. And no clicks from it in the latest 28 days, against one before.
The firm’s own name. For the second month, Google’s data returned no appearances for the business name. The likely read, not a finding: Google leaves very rare searches out of this data.
Reviews. Still two, after thirty-two months. Reviews are earned by the owner on the job; our part is the replies and follow-up.
Where the December Test Stands
A results post on December 7 depends on two things. First, the listing interactions recover. Both offices are at or near July’s level, but the main office fell from September. Second, a city page ranks for its own town. One city page is now Google’s page for its town, at position 9 on one wording, but on 4 appearances a month. As we read it, that is close, not met. Unless both hold clearly in December, that post will be a third visibility update and will say so.
What We Are Doing Next
- The weekly cycle continues, with every published claim checked.
- The same two jobs as last month: more internal links to the city pages, starting with the one now closest to page one, and one clear page for the main city search, so Google stops rotating between several.
Common Questions
Why did calls from the Google listing drop after a big September?
Most likely because September was the unusual month, with a jump in views. In October views at the main office fell back from 344 to 206, and calls across both offices went from 13 to 12. On a one-engineer firm, counts this small swing on their own, so one month up or down is not a trend.
What does it mean when a page gets more appearances but a lower position?
It usually means Google is showing the page for more kinds of searches, including ones where it is a weaker match. The average position drops because the new searches pull it down, even if the page holds its place for its main search. It is normal for a new page in its first few months. Watch the main search for that page, not the overall average.
How long does it take a new city page to rank for its own town?
On this evidence, about three months to get close. Ten city pages went live in August. By early November one of them is the page Google shows for its own town, at position 9 on one wording and 11 on the more common one. The others are still being tested on page two and beyond. Expect months, not weeks.
Why do the rank tracker and Search Console disagree?
They measure different things. A rank tracker runs one search from one fixed place on one day. Search Console averages every real search over a month, from every location and device. Last month they disagreed on the main city search. This month they roughly agree, at #5 on the tracker and position 4 in Google’s average. When they disagree, we print both and wait for the next reading.
Why count only the searches for services the business sells?
Because those are the people who might hire you. This firm’s site shows on page one for 147 searches, but most are from two articles that explain engineering terms. Readers of those are often students or homeowners with a question, not buyers. Counting service searches separately, 19 last month and 29 now, keeps the real story from being buried under explainer traffic.
Is nearly four times the search appearances a result of the last three months?
No. August to October appearances went from 5,432 in 2025 to 20,260 in 2026, and most of that growth was in place before the process changed in August. It is the product of two and a half years of steady work. The last three months are the audit, the rebuild, the city pages and the listing fixes.
What would prove this is working for the business, not just for Google?
A count of real enquiries tied to a source. The firm does not have that today. One option we offer owners is a tracked phone line on the website, the same kind our own AI receptionist runs on. It is the owner’s choice. Until something like it exists, every number here is visibility.
Why publish the numbers that went down?
Because an update with only good numbers tells you nothing. This month the main office listing fell on every line and three tracked searches slipped, in the same month that the main city search and service searches improved. You should see both side by side and weigh them yourself. We do the same on our own site.
