Sixteen Weeks In: What Changed for a Contractor Who Started From Nothing

Two months ago we published the first seven weeks of local SEO for a family-run general contractor and remodeler in a large California city. The contractor started with no website, an unverified Google listing and zero reviews. Every 30 days we pull the same numbers again. The first update ran at twelve weeks. This is the second.

Everything below was pulled on November 5, 2026, day 113 of the work, sixteen weeks in. Google’s search data runs a few days behind, so the latest day available was November 3. Search figures are United States only. Google listing figures come from a synced copy of the listing’s data, not Google’s own screen.

This is a visibility update, not a results post. It shows what Google shows. It does not show what the phone did.

The Numbers, Then and Now

How often Google shows the site. In the first 26 days the site existed (July 15 to August 9), Google showed it 71 times and 7 people clicked. Last month’s update printed 1,334 appearances and 17 clicks for September 9 to October 4, and that window still reads the same today. The latest 26 days (October 9 to November 3) read 2,904 appearances and 19 clicks.

Month against month. September: 1,100 appearances, 18 clicks. October: 3,212 appearances, 21 clicks.

The latest full week. Last month the latest full week (September 28 to October 4) had 5 clicks on 717 appearances. The week of October 26 to November 1 had 9 clicks on 1,030.

The four searches that matter most, each a service plus their city, latest 26 days:

  • General contractor: still no impressions.
  • Kitchen remodeling: no impressions this time. Last month printed position 36 on 18. Pulled again today, that older window reads 24 on 23.
  • Bathroom remodeling: still no impressions for that exact phrase. A close variant, bathroom remodel plus their city, shows at position 10 on 13 impressions. That is a first reading, so it is a standing, not a gain.
  • Home additions: position 24 on 32 impressions. Last month printed 68 on 37. Pulled again today, that older window reads 12 on 38.

Page one, latest 28 days (October 7 to November 3). The raw count is 83 searches. We applied one written rule to both this window and last month’s, pulled again today: remove permit-office and inspection searches, towns outside the service area, services they do not sell, and noise. Under that rule last month reads 17 (15 service searches and 2 name searches) and this month reads 44 (38 service searches and 6 name searches). Last month’s post printed 16 and 14 on a slightly looser rule. Three of the 44 are in first place: the exact business name, and two service searches that were each seen once.

The rank tracker. It holds 54 searches and still reads only four, all their own name: first place for the name and a short form of it, second for a common misspelling (ninth last month), ninth for an abbreviation. For the 50 service searches it has still not returned a reading. Search Console shows two of those exact tracked searches on page one, so the tracker is the problem, not the site. There is no tracked service position in this update.

The website. 24 pages, unchanged. 30 articles, three every week since August 31. Google has accepted 51 addresses in the sitemap with 0 errors, up from 40.

The map grids (twelve grids, 64 points each, same layout as August, no reading from before the work began). Last month’s reading, then the latest. General contractor 20.8 to 20.9. Kitchen remodeling 20.7, unchanged. Bathroom remodeling 20.8, unchanged. Home remodeling 20.9, unchanged. Construction company 20.7, unchanged. Deck builder 19.8 to 20.0. Finish carpentry 14.1 to 15.2. Remodeling contractor 20.9 to 21.0. Custom home builder 20.9 last month; the latest reading does not find the business. Four grids now do not find it, up from three.

The Google listing, June, July, August, September, October. September reads the same today as it did last month.

  • Profile views: 53, 77, 76, 77, 94.
  • Search appearances: 32, 40, 36, 35, 50.
  • Website clicks: 0, 0, 2, 4, 2.
  • Calls from the Google listing: 2, 0, 0, 0, 0.
  • Direction requests: 82, 37, 23, 52, 56.
  • Total interactions: 84, 37, 25, 56, 58.

Profile completeness is 61.9%, unchanged. Reviews: 0, unchanged. Google posts published: 31, up from 24.

What Went Up

Google showed the site more than twice as often in the latest 26 days as in the 26 before, 1,334 to 2,904. Service searches on page one went from 15 to 38 on the same rule. The exact business name is back in first place after a month with no impressions at all. Listing views rose from 77 to 94 and search appearances from 35 to 50, with views on phones back up after falling in September.

Read those carefully. The 38 service searches drew 265 impressions between them. The permit-office and inspection searches we removed drew 342. The gap is narrower than last month, when it was 77 against 158, but people looking for the city permit office are still the largest single group seeing this site on page one, and they are not shopping for a contractor.

What Went Down or Did Not Move

Calls from the Google listing: zero for the fourth month. Two in June, then zero in July, August, September and October. The likely read, not a finding: a listing with no reviews gets seen but not chosen. Getting review requests started is still the first job.

Reviews: still zero.

Clicks barely moved. Appearances more than doubled; clicks went from 17 to 19. The likely read, not a finding: most of the new appearances are low on the page or on permit searches, where nobody clicks through to a builder.

Kitchen searches fell away. Kitchen remodeling plus their city went from a reading to no impressions. The kitchen article that carried most of those searches was shown 142 times in the September window and 13 times in the latest one. The likely read, not a finding: Google tried the article for kitchen remodel searches and moved on, and the kitchen service page has not picked them up.

Home additions plus their city: unsettled. 24 against the 68 printed last month looks like a gain. 24 against today’s reading of the same older window, 12, is worse. We are calling it neither. The search is still not on page one.

Website clicks from the listing: 4 to 2. Views on computers in Maps fell from 30 to 17. The likely read, not a finding: small numbers moving around.

The map grids drifted the wrong way. Finish carpentry went from 14.1 to 15.2, deck builder from 19.8 to 20.0, remodeling contractor from 20.9 to 21.0, and the custom home builder grid no longer finds the business. The likely read, not a finding: the businesses holding those points have reviews and this one does not.

Still below June. Directions are 56 against 82 in June, and interactions 58 against 84.

No movement at all: general contractor still shows no impressions, the tracker still returns nothing for 50 service searches, and profile completeness has not changed.

What We Are Doing Next

Review requests first. Then repairing the tracker so December has service readings. Articles keep going up three a week, aimed at the services people hire for rather than permits. And a look at why the kitchen searches left, starting with the kitchen service page.

This is the same local SEO work we run for every client, and we report our own site’s numbers the same way.

Common Questions

Google shows my site twice as often, so why aren’t clicks going up?

Because most new appearances are not clicks waiting to happen. This contractor went from 1,334 appearances to 2,904 in 26 days, and clicks went from 17 to 19. Many of those appearances were low on the page or on searches for the city permit office. Count the searches where someone wants to hire, not the total.

Is four months long enough to judge local SEO?

It is long enough to judge the build, not the payoff. At sixteen weeks this contractor has 24 pages, 30 articles, 51 addresses accepted by Google and 38 service searches on page one, most on a handful of impressions each. The biggest search, general contractor plus their city, still shows nothing. A site this new usually needs longer than that.

Why did a search I was showing for disappear?

Google tests new pages on many searches, then keeps some and drops others. Here a kitchen article was shown 142 times in one window and 13 in the next, and the kitchen searches went with it. When that happens, check which page Google was using and whether your service page is the better answer.

Why did last month’s numbers change when you pulled them again?

Google keeps adjusting its search data after the fact. One home-additions reading was printed as position 68 last month and reads 12 for the same dates today. That is why we pull both windows on the same day and say so when an old reading no longer holds.

How do I get calls from my Google listing?

Start with reviews. This listing is verified, has 31 posts, and still shows zero calls for four straight months with zero reviews. People choose the business other people have vouched for. A simple review request and follow-up process after every finished job is the step most owners skip.

Why does my rank tracker show nothing for most searches?

Sometimes the site is out of range, and sometimes the tracker itself is broken. Here Google’s own data puts two of the tracked service searches on page one while the tracker returns nothing for them, so the tracker is at fault. Until it is fixed, we report no tracked service position rather than guess.

Do blog articles actually bring in customers?

Some bring attention without customers. Articles about permits put this contractor on page one for searches that drew 342 impressions, but those people wanted the city. Searches about additions, kitchens and bathrooms drew 265, and those people are closer to hiring. Write for the person with a project, not the person with a form to file.

What is a map grid, and why is mine slipping?

A map grid checks where your listing shows up from many points around town. This contractor sits near 20th for most services and lost a little ground on three grids this month. Map position follows reviews, distance and how complete the listing is. With zero reviews, small slips are what you should expect.
