Why Your AI Output Looks Like Garbage (And the 3 Things That Fix It)

Business owners who have tried ChatGPT or Claude, got generic mush back, and concluded AI can't write for their business. Best taken after Where to Start with AI, but works on its own.
What you'll be able to do
- Understand why vague prompts produce average, could-be-anyone output
- Brief context: the 8–12 facts that change the result, attached files first, no filler
- Use one real example from your sent folder to get your actual voice back
- Set a standard for done: length, format, must-include, banned phrases
- Diagnose bad output in 60 seconds and fix it in the same chat
- Build a brief library with an update habit that compounds
Lessons
You typed “write a follow-up email to a customer,” got something grammatically clean and professionally bland, winced, and filed AI under “not good enough yet.” Wrong conclusion. Right evidence.
When you give an AI a vague instruction it has no way of knowing which of a million possible answers you want, so it gives you the average — and the average of everything ever written is beige. This course shows you the three ingredients every disappointing output is missing: context (the ten facts the AI can’t know), examples (one real sample of your voice beats ten adjectives), and a standard for done (length, format, must-include, banned phrases, and one “done means…” sentence).
Each fix gets its own lesson with a worked example you can steal — an HVAC quote follow-up, a med spa promo, a taco shop’s Instagram post, a law firm’s review response. Then you learn the 60-second diagnosis: read a bad draft, spot which ingredient failed, and fix it in the same chat instead of starting over.
The last lesson turns your best briefs into a library — saved, reusable, and improving every month — so you stop paying for the same thinking twice and your office manager can run them too.
Questions people ask
Is this a prompt engineering course?
No. It is a briefing course. You already brief new hires with context, examples and a standard for done — this course applies the same habit to AI, in plain language.
Which AI tool do I need?
Any of them. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all respond the same way to a good brief. The course is tool-agnostic.
Do I need to take Where to Start with AI first?
It helps — this course builds on the four-part brief from that one — but every idea is re-explained here, so you can start with this course.
How long does it take?
Six lessons of about 8–10 minutes each. Each lesson ends with a short exercise on one real task from your business.
Will this work for reviews, social posts and job ads too?
Yes. The worked examples cover a quote follow-up, a promo email, an Instagram post and a public review response, and the final lesson gives you a starter shelf of five briefs to build.
